Elements and Performance Criteria

1. Plan and prepare for conduct roadway maintenance
   • Access, interpret and apply roadway maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
   • Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
   • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues and implement control measures
   • Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment and protective clothing
   • Access, interpret and apply mine environmental data required to complete the allocated work
   • Obtain and interpret emergency procedures and be prepared for fire/accident/emergency
   • Coordinate and transport resources required for the work to the worksite
2. Conduct roadway maintenance
   • Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
   • Carry out equipment, materials and services checks
   • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up, shutdown and secure equipment procedures
   • Erect/post warning signals and signs prior to commencement of task
   • Drive and operate plant/equipment
   • Apply ballast to roadways
   • Carry out roadway dust suppression
   • Divert and drain roof and floor water
   • Continually monitor hazards and risks, and ensure safety of self, other personnel, plant and equipment
3. Finalise work procedures
   • Complete work plan within the operating capabilities of the equipment
   • Isolate services
   • Complete written and verbal job/task reports
4. Carry out operator maintenance on equipment
   • Prepare machine/equipment for maintenance
   • Conduct inspection and fault finding
   • Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks
   • Carry out housekeeping activities
   • Process written maintenance records

Performance Evidence

Evidence is required to be collected that demonstrates a candidate’s competency in this unit. Evidence must be relevant to the roles within this sector’s work operations and satisfy all of the requirements of the performance criteria of this unit and include evidence that the candidate:

locates and applies relevant documentation, policies and procedures

implements the requirements, procedures and techniques for the safe, effective and efficient completion of roadway maintenance including:

reading, interpreting and applying technical information

identifying, addressing and reporting environmental issues, potential hazards and risks

applying equipment/manual handling techniques

selecting and using relevant tools and equipment

complying with environmental requirements

reading and interpreting mine plans

operating and maintaining the roadway maintenance equipment

identifying, selecting and applying roadway maintenance materials

identifying work requirements

works effectively with others to undertake and complete the roadway maintenance in a way that meets all of the required outcomes including:

organising work activities to meet all task requirements

communicating clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions

complying with written and verbal reporting requirements and procedures

resolving coordination requirements throughout work activities

demonstrates completion of conducting roadway maintenance that safely, effectively and efficiently meets all of the required outcomes on more than one (1) occasion including:

coordinating and transporting resources including:

personnel

machinery

materials

power

water

carrying out equipment checks on three (3) of the following:

pumps

pumping equipment

signs

barriers

tools

carrying out material checks on three (3) of the following:

ballast

concrete (readymix and quickset)

timber

salt

flyash

conducting road maintenance including three (3) of the following:

contouring

dust suppression

ballasting holes

cutting drains

performing equipment inspections and carrying out operational maintenance

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge of conducting roadway maintenance through:

reading, interpreting and applying mine operational procedures, layout and plan

road maintenance equipment capabilities, limitations and maintenance requirement

roadway maintenance materials and their application

mine geological conditions

complying with mine environmental requirements and constraints related to roadway maintenance

being prepared for fire/accident/emergency
